Valuable Goods: Acceptance of Valuable Cargo
Valuable cargo will only be accepted if the following requirements are met:
- The shipper made
a prior agreement with LAN CARGO.
- The outer dimensions of the packages are at least 20 x 12 x 8 in. (50 x 30 x 20
cm.), that is, 30.000 cm³ or its equivalent.
- Shipments must be
packed in resistant wood boxes only, that are at least one (1) inch thick, or in
resistant metal boxes.
Fiberboard boxes and
fabric bags will not be accepted.*
- Two 2 metal straps of one 1 inch wide must be placed across the width of the box
and one 1 or two 2 metal straps must be placed along the length of the box. At least two 2 numbered
seals must be fixed at the point of intersection between the metal straps (See Figure 1).
- Rigid plastic boxes can be used as an alternative. (See Figure 2).
- The shipper must
verify whit the LAN CARGO's local offices the cutoff time at the airport of origin
for the acceptance of valuable shipments.
- The shipper must offer LAN CARGO a written copy of the agreement with the
consignee, assuring that the consignee will take possession of the shipment immediately after the
customs clearance is completed at the point of destination.

Valuable cargo will not be accepted in a closed ULD built by the shipper, or as
part of a mixed or consolidated shipment. Valuable cargo can only be accepted as a consolidated
shipment when all the shipment is comprised of valuable cargo. LAN CARGO can, at its discretion,
load this type of shipment within an ULD at the departure airport.
- Shippers of gold, precious stones, precious metals, banknotes, pearls, or other
highly valuable cargo must make a prior agreement with the local LAN CARGO office in order to
assure that all necessary security measures are taken at the departure airport.
- The packaging of all valuable cargo will be thoroughly inspected at the moment
of acceptance. Any package with sings of being tampered with or with signs of damage as well as all
of those packages not in compliance with the packing requirements will not be accepted for
carriage. Furthermore, reconditioned packages showing patches or added portions will not be
accepted for carriage.
* Rigid plastic boxes and hinged boxes prepared to receive metal clasps can be
used as an alternative for valuable cargo. The shipper has the discretion of selecting the size of
the box, as long as it meets the minimum size requirements set forth above.
