Live Animals: Marking and Labeling
When transporting live animals (AVI)
handling code takes precedence over all other handling codes*.
Containers used for transporting live animals must be marked with the following information:
- Recipient or shipper's name, address, and telephone number.
- Common and scientific name of animal(s) and number of animals within the
container, except for domestic pets (dogs, cats, horses, etc.), which do not require the scientific
name.
- The word "POISON" when the animal(s) transported can inflict poisonous bites or
stings.
- The phrase "THIS ANIMAL BITES" or "STINGS" (whichever is most appropriate), in
cases of species that, without being poisonous, can bite or sting handlers.
Additionally, containers must have the following labels:
- "Live Animals" label, with bright green figures over a light green background.
The type of animal being transported must be identified by circling the corresponding figure on the
label (i.e.: mammals, birds, reptiles, or fish).
- Package orientation labels on all four sides of the container.
- "Laboratory Animal" labels when applicable.
- Any other label required by the countries of transit and destination.
- The minimum label size is 10 x 15 cms.
Other conditions and/or requirements may be applicable.

* This rule apply even when animals are to be slaughtered for food production
upon arrival at the destination. Animals shipped for the purpose of being slaughtered at
destination, will receive the same treatment as all other animals.
