Live Animals: Containers
Only containers constructed according to the specifications listed in the current
issue of
IATA's Live Animals Regulations will be accepted
for carriage.
Although a container's form may vary somewhat from the one shown in the corresponding
regulation, the construction must conform to the following technical specifications:
- A size that allows the animal to stand naturally, turn inside the container
(when relevant), and lie down.
- Ventilation area according to IATA's specifications.
- Enough strength to protect and hold back animals at all times.
- Watertightness.
- Surface area versus crowding density, depending on species.
- Divisions.
- Appropriate watering and feeding equipment.
Once the container is accepted by LAN CARGO, a Verification List is issued according to IATA's
Live Animals Regulations, verifying, among other things, the following:
- Strength of the container, depending on animal.
- Construction materials conforming to IATA's Live Animals Regulations guide.
- The interior dimensions of the container to ensure animal comfort.
- Watertightness.
- Hygiene and disinfection.
- Necessary feeding and watering equipment.
- Ventilation area according to IATA's Live Animals Regulations guide.
- Crowding density.
- Segregation.
- Separation bars to protect ventilation openings.
- Perching bars, when necessary.
