Dangerous Goods: LAN CARGO Requirements

The following requirements apply to LAN CARGO and its affiliate companies.

LA-01

  1. Dangerous goods offered for transport under an exemption, as detailed in IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulations section 2.6.1, will be accepted only after prior inspection and approval by LAN CARGO's Technical Committee on Dangerous Goods.
  2. Any requirement relative to the granting of exemptions and approvals will be coordinated with LAN CARGO's Safety Department, which shall verify any decision with the Technical Committee on Dangerous Goods.

LA-02

Dangerous goods for transport must be received with sufficient time in advance to allow for verification of, acceptance and preparation of all documentation. Shippers must contact LAN CARGO offices to confirm cutoff times for the reception of dangerous goods shipments prior to flight departure.

LA-03

Not used.

LA-04

Not used.

LA-05

Chemical oxygen generators will only be accepted for transportation if they comply with all the following requirements:

  • The oxygen generator must be in its original, unopened packaging. If packaging shows damage or evidence of handling, it will not be accepted.
  • The packaging and attached documentation must confirm that the oxygen generator is unused and unexpired.

LA-06

For Toxic Substances included in Division 6.1 or Division 2.3 of IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulations Manual, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Toxic substances under Division 6.1, Packing Group I, that are toxic by inhalation will not be accepted for transport, except with the previous approval from LAN CARGO's Safety Department (See LA-01).
  2. Toxic gases under Division 2.3 will not be accepted for transport, except with the previous approval from LAN CARGO's Safety Department. See LA-01.
  3. When a substance for transport presents the risk of mist, dust, or vapor inhalation, the Exporter's Declaration must accordingly include the following text in the box titled Additional Handling Information: «Risk of mist, dust, or vapor inhalation».

    Notes:
    - This requirement applies only to the primary risk.

    - If the substance has more than one mean of exposure, the risk determined by the packing group must be used.

  4. Toxic substances of any kind will not be accepted for transport in 5H2, 5H3, 5H4, or 5M2 bags as their sole packaging, unless they are enclosed within a strong, heat sealed polyethylene bag of at least 200 microns thick. If these types of packages are offered with exterior packaging in a cargo pallet, they will only be accepted if:
    • The cargo pallet is firm and strong enough to withstand the weight load without bending when raised by a forklift.
    • The pallet's surface must be smooth and continuous, without any sharp, protruding points that can cut through the bags.
    • The cargo pallet includes floor separation bars for lifting purposes.

LA-07

The shipping of infectious substances is accepted with previous arrangement only. In addition, the following conditions apply:

  1. Documentation requirements: The shipper must present written proof (i.e. fax, letter, telex, etc.) that the infectious substances can legally enter the country of destination and that all the requirements imposed by the countries of origin, transit and destination have been complied with.
  2. The shipper must attach an official Certificate, duly signed and issued by a doctor, scientist, or other similar professional who can confirm that the sample classification was prepared in accordance with 3.6.2.2.3.
  3. Prohibitions: infected animals, whether dead (all remains) or alive, will not be accepted for carriage.

LA-08

The transportation of batteries requires prior arrangements to ensure that the following requirements are met:

  1. Wet and moist batteries filled with corrosive liquid electrolytes can be accepted for transport on cargo aircrafts only ("CAO").

    In addition to the requirements detailed in Packing Instructions 800, each battery must be individually packed with absorbent and cushioned material that will not react with the liquid electrolytes.

    Exceptions to point A:

    • Vehicles as provided by LA-10.
    • Batteries shipped as part of a passenger's battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid.
  2. Special Provision A67 only applies to new, non-spillable wet batteries meeting the following requirements:

    • Documentation must be attached to the shipment certifying that the batteries are new and comply with the requirements established by Special Provision A67.
    • Battery terminals must be insulated or otherwise protected to avoid short circuits.

LA-09

Mercury will be accepted for transport only if it complies with the following requirements:

  • Acceptance is subject to transportation on cargo aircrafts only.
  • Only combination packages will be accepted.
  • The inner packaging must be IP2-plastic or steel quicksilver flasks. IP1 and IP8 inner packaging cannot be used.
  • Drums (1G) or carton boxes (4G) cannot be used as outer packaging.
  • The outer packaging must have strong, puncture resistant, leak-proof linings impervious to mercury and must comply with Packing Group I requirements.
  • Each package cannot exceed 1 L.

LA-10

Acceptance of vehicles (i.e. automobiles and other self-propelled vehicles), is subject to the following conditions:

  • The fuel tank must be completely drained.
  • Batteries filled with corrosive electrolyte will only be accepted for vehicles that are not likely to be transported in any other than the upright position.

LA-11

If and when any doubt arises regarding a substance's classification, the shipper must provide upon LAN CARGO's request, a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet ("MSDS") for the applicable substance or a statement, on company letterhead, confirming the classification. See 8.0.1 and 8.3.

LA-12

Dangerous goods in exempt quantities will only be accepted with previous arrangements. Please contact the LAN CARGO office nearest you for additional details. See 1.3.2, 2.7, and 9.1.1.

LA-13

Not used.

LA-14

Markings required under 7.1.5, and the handling and hazard labels on packages containing dangerous goods must be placed on the sides of each package. Markings and labels must not be placed on the top or on the bottom of the package. This requirement does not apply to the placement of the shipper and consignee's name and address.

LA-15

LAN CARGO will not accept fissionable material for transport, as defined in 10.3.7.
